Unsafe electrical goods seized and destroyed

As part of the on-going National Trading Standards Safety at Ports project, three separate shipments containing over £30,000 worth of unsafe electrical items were intercepted and destroyed by Hounslow Council’s Trading Standards Enforcement Officers at Heathrow Airport.

The consignments contained approximately 1,000 goods including various LEDs, power adapters and facial steamers all of which were assessed at the border point.

An assessment was made of the electrical items with failures to comply with labelling requirements, and essential safety requirements in accordance with the Electrical Equipment [Safety] Regulations 2016. The importer also failed to provide certificates and other supporting documentation to support initial safety claims, which resulted in the products posing a potential risk to UK consumers.

The importer was unable to rectify the issues to bring the products into compliance with UK law, and subsequently forfeited the goods to Trading Standards for destruction last week.
