Thinking of becoming an apprentice?

Young people looking to get on the first rungs of the ladder in employment can get experience and much more by applying to Hounslow Council’s award-winning apprenticeship programme.

The council is currently recruiting for the next set of apprentices to start in September. The scheme offers people between the ages of 16 and 24, a chance to learn and hone skills, receive training and the opportunity to gain further qualifications while gaining on-the-job experience with a placement in a range of departments from ICT to engineering.

The deadline for applying to the programme is Sunday 21 August. Those interested should go to http://www.hounslow.gov.uk/supportingintowork

Successful applicants also enjoy a host of benefits including holiday pay, can take part in away-day events, plus receive financial advice and one-to-one support.

More than 70 apprentices have been recruited to the council’s scheme over the last two years, with placements going to young people from different backgrounds across the borough.

Recently, the council recently held an award ceremony to celebrate the success of last year’s intake of apprentices. There was a high calibre of nominees and it was a difficult choice to pick the Apprentice of the Year.

The worthy winner was Tarandeep Virdee, 19, who is an apprentice Service Desk Analyst for the council’s ICT team.

He was nominated for the award by his manager, who said Tarandeep: “continually showed ambition to attain goals and targets and achieving them, while massively contributing to the team.”

Tarandeep, from Hounslow, who began his placement in October 2015, said: “This apprenticeship placement has been fantastic and has given me important experience, of which I wouldn’t get anywhere else.

“I work in a very supportive team and it is helping me gain skills and knowledge that I can use not only now but in the future to carry out the career I choose to do.”

Hounslow Council works in partnership with Barclays Bank, which delivers cybercrime and financial awareness sessions to apprentices as part of the scheme, so young people can learn about internet security and how to manage money as they start their careers.

Councillor Richard Foote, Cabinet Member for Communities, Hounslow Council, said: “We’re extremely proud of our apprenticeship programme which has already won awards and is helping many of the young people in our borough make that all important first step into the working world.

“We are looking for more people to join us and I would encourage anyone who is looking to make a way into employment, to apply for our programme and get experience, skills, training and a whole lot more to assist them in finding the right career.”
