Stub it out for Stoptober!
Stoptober is the biggest mass quit attempt in the country and is based on research that if you can stop smoking for 28 days, you are five times more likely to stay smoke free for good.
With the launch of the health improvement service, One You Hounslow, this year there is even more support to help you quit smoking for good such as FREE one-to-one text and email support with a health advisor, weekly drop-in sessions and a range of medication available on prescription.
Councillor Corinna Smart, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Leisure, Hounslow Council, said: “Stoptober is the perfect opportunity for all those people who have not yet got around to quitting smoking, to do so now. Last year, we had such a fantastic response from residents across the borough who sought help and advice during Stoptober and have managed to give up successfully for good.
She said: “Let them be an inspiration to those who are just starting on that journey – you can do it! The help is out there and there’s no excuse not to try.”
This year for Stoptober, One You Hounslow is encouraging people to get more active by running a prize draw for everyone that set a quit date between October 1 and 31 with a number of different prizes available.
Prizes include one Fit Bit, two FREE tickets to a Brentford Football Club game, one FREE month gym pass from Fusion Lifestyle and six FREE exercise classes.
Stephen Little, who lives in Isleworth, smoked nearly 50 cigarettes a day. He started at age 11 and was smoking for 52 years.
After nearly going blind as a result of a brain tumour, Stephen decided to turn his life around and first on the agenda was to quit smoking. He got in touch with One You Hounslow to receive specialist one-to-one support and as a result was introduced to Lavina, a Stop Smoking Specialist at the Heart of Hounslow Centre for Health.
He said: “It’s what she does. She texts you, she’s there for you and she listens. We tried everything and that’s what’s great about it. If it didn’t work then we’d try something else. It’s only through her patience that I’ve stopped – she’s got the patience of a saint.”
Stephen’s eyesight has recovered since being smoke free from May 18 this year.
A total of 731 Hounslow smokers took part in last year’s Stoptober challenge – with over 300 residents registering with the Hounslow NHS stop smoking service throughout October for extra help and support to quit smoking.
