Streets milestone reached

One million square metres of new road and pavement has been laid in Hounslow in little over two years.

To mark the occasion deputy leader of the council, Councillor Amrit Mann, joined Hounslow Highways service director, Rob Gillespie, on Lions Way in Brentford.

Cllr Mann found out more about the work of Hounslow Highways and assisted the Eurovia Surfacing crews, working on behalf of Hounslow Highways, with raking newly laid asphalt.

Cllr Mann said:  “We are just over two years into the project and this is a great milestone. With nearly three years remaining on the core investment period, there is still much to do across the borough, but I think most would agree that much of the borough has already been transformed for the better.”

Rob Gillespie said: “We are obviously delighted to be celebrating laying the 1,000,000m² of road and pavement surfacing in the borough, but appreciate we still have a lot of work to do. We have now completed 48 per cent of our programme and will continue in our efforts to improve the existing road and footway surfaces as part of the core investment period. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank residents and businesses for their understanding whilst the major work takes place.”

Hounslow Highways took over responsibility for the borough’s roads on the 1 January 2013. Delivering a range of services to improve Hounslow’s streets until 2038, works include resurfacing and improving the 259 miles of roads and 458 miles of footpaths, replacing the borough’s 16,000 street lights with brighter, more environmentally friendly LED (light emitting diode) lights and improving the overall street scene.

Notes to Editors:

  1. Hounslow Highways, the appointed highways service provider, officially began work in the borough on 1 January 2013. Working in partnership with the London Borough of Hounslow since March 2012 to prepare for the works, Hounslow Highways is itself a partnership between VINCI Concessions, Ringway and BIFM – three organisations each with significant expertise in the financing, management and delivery of engineering solutions for local businesses and communities.
  2. The contract will see an investment of £800 million in the London Borough of Hounslow and includes improvements and maintenance of the entire street scene assets from “fence to fence”.

3. During the first five years of the contract, Hounslow Highways will make significant investment in the borough through VINCI Concessions to improve the 259 miles of roads and 458 miles of footpaths. Additionally, 16,000 street lighting units will be replaced with low-energy, low-carbon LED lanterns controlled by a ‘Control and Monitoring System’ across the borough. Hounslow Highways is also responsible for the improvement and maintenance of the structures within the borough, street cleansing activities and environmental management and enforcement.
