Happy Birthday to The Queen

Hounslow celebrated The Queen’s 90th birthday in style with pomp and ceremony as a beacon was lit in honour of Her Majesty.

Residents joined Mayor of Hounslow, Councillor Nisar Malik, Councillor Steve Curran, Leader of Hounslow Council, special guests, officers and staff in Lampton Park on Thursday evening, to see Hounslow Cadet Sargeant Major Khalil Ahmad, from the Heston Army Cadet Force [ACF] light the beacon.

Leading the parade were the 1st Battalion Irish Guards along with the Heston Cadet Army Force brass band.

The event was opened by the Deputy Lieutenant for Hounslow Maria Pedro, who read out a special message from His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales.

Following the lighting of the beacon, there was a rendition of Happy Birthday and the National Anthem, led by former Hounslow’s Got Talent winner Megan Price.

The Mayor of Hounslow thanked everyone for attending and said that Hounslow was proud to play its part in such a commemorative event that marked the monarch’s milestone birthday.

Councillor Steve Curran, Leader of Hounslow Council, said: “We were delighted to light a beacon and send our congratulations to Her Majesty.

“Everyone in Hounslow has played a part in the celebrations and it was great to see many people come together to do so.”

Over a 1,000 beacons were lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, UK overseas Territories and a Commonwealth Country to celebrate the landmark birthday.

The Queen herself lit a beacon at Windsor Castle, accompanied by The Prince of Wales.

Beacons were lit at churches, on farms, country parks, village greens and on country estates. Lighthouses, National Trust and English Heritage properties also took part.

The Army Cadet Force took special gas fuelled Beacons to the top of the four highest peaks in the UK:

. Ben Nevis – Scotland (1st Battalion Highlanders Army Cadet Force)

. Mount Snowdon – Wales (Clwyd and Gwynedd Army Cadet Force)

. Scafell Pike – England (Cumbria Army Cadet Force)

. Slieve Donard – Northern Ireland (2nd NI Battalion Army Cadet Force)
