The borough officially came into being on 1 April 1965 along with 31 others across London. It comprised the area of the former Brentford and Chiswick Urban District, Feltham Urban District and the Heston and Isleworth Urban District (which held borough status as did Brentford and Chiswick) of Middlesex.
To mark the anniversary we’ll be taking a look back at how the borough has changed over the years, covering everything from the physical environment to lifestyles in general. We’ll be looking at the development of the local town centres, housing and transport, as well as our changing tastes in fashion, music and food.
Throughout the year, we will be delving into our archives to remember significant milestones and events. We’ll be dusting off our old films and photographs and showing them here on our website. We’ll be holding special events and exhibitions and running activities and projects in local schools. Keep visiting this page for the latest news.
But we need your help too!
We’d like everyone who has lived in the borough for a long time to tell us about their memories and experiences of living in Hounslow, or share any photos of the borough over the past 50 years.
If you or a family member has lived in the borough since 1965, we’d love to hear your recollections or see your photos, and if you haven’t quite reached 50 years as a resident but have some stories to tell about Hounslow in the 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s, we’d still like you to get in contact. Email firstname.lastname@example.org.
